I thought I was prepared for the Ha Giang Loop. I had spent hours researching the routes, planning the right outfits (gotta look cute for those pictures 😉), and social media scrolling to get my expectations right.
But within the first few hours, I realized this isn’t just any scenic bike ride. This 350-kms ride through dreamy landscapes can be extensive, physically demanding, and even unpredictable at times. And yet, it can also be one of the most intense and rare experiences that stays with you for a long, long time – even after it’s over—if you prepare for it the right way.
One thing that makes a bigger difference than you’d think? What you pack. If you’re planning the Ha Giang Loop, look no further. In this article, I share what to bring, what to skip, and what I wish I had known earlier based on my personal experience.
Ha Giang Loop Packing List
One of the most asked questions before Ha Giang Loop Tour is – what should you pack. After just a few hours on the road, I realized that packing right and light can completely change how comfortable and enjoyable your journey feels – especially with long riding hours and unpredictable weather.
Here’s a practical Ha Giang Loop packing list based on my personal experience—honestly, I wish I had come across something like this before my trip.
Clothing & Layers
- Windcheater (a must-have for strong winds)
- Rain jacket (it can literally rain anytime in the mountains)
- 1 warm fleece or hoodie (it can get pretty chilly during early mornings and late nights)
- 2-3 Comfy, stretchy pants (for those long hours on the bike)
- 2 basic tees
- Swimwear (when you want to take a dip in the pristine water after hours of riding)
- Nightwear (to help you relax and get a much-needed good night’s sleep)
Essentials & Protection
- Sunscreen (SPF-50+)
- Sunglasses (yes, sunburn is a thing)
- Plenty of water (to ensure that you do not dehydrate yourself during the loop)
- Power bank and chargers
Money & Practical Items
Enough cash (as ATMs are limited and not very reliable on the Ha Giang Loop)
Health & Safety
First-aid kit (always better to be safe than sorry 😊)
Footwear
- Flip-flops
- Comfortable shoes (for riding and short hikes)
This is my personal list of essentials—some of these I picked up during the trip, and some I wish I had planned better from the start. If you’re doing the Ha Giang Loop soon, packing smart will make a bigger difference than you expect. Let me know in the comments what worked for you. Would love to hear about your experience.
What NOT to pack for the Ha Giang Loop Tour
While most guides focus on what to bring, knowing what not to carry is just as important.
- Large suitcases/hard-shelled bags (it’s difficult to strap them on your bikes)
- Too-many clothes (trust me your back will thank you later for this)
- Valuables (I left all my extra credit cards, jewellery, laptops, kindle at Safari Hostel, where they safely stored my valuables at no extra cost!! Talk about good after sales service 😊)
- Revealing Clothes (You’ll be passing through many ethnic and local villages, and it’s always a good idea to dress modestly there. Remember, when in Rome, do as the Romans do)
Packing right and light won’t just make your Ha Giang Loop easier—it will totally transform your experience. When you’re not constantly worried about managing your baggage, you have the time and space to actually take in the breathtaking views and everything in between. If you’re planning to embark on this once in a lifetime experience, I hope this guide helps you feel a bit more prepared—and so much more excited. Happy and safe travels 😊
