Ha Giang Loop Packing List: The Ultimate Season-by-Season Guide
Packing for the Ha Giang Loop is completely different from packing for a beach holiday in Hoi An or a city stroll in Hanoi. Here, the weather changes with altitude, season, and time of day — leaving many travelers freezing at night or completely soaked on the road.
We’ve organized this packing checklist based on our experience running small-group motorcycle loops across northern Vietnam. Whether you are driving yourself or sitting back with an experienced Easy Rider, here is exactly what to bring.
⚡ Core Packing Rules (No Matter the Season)
- Travel Light: Store your main large luggage at our hostel/office in Ha Giang for FREE. Pack only a small 15-20L backpack for the loop.
- Riding Footwear: Some guests and easy riders wear sandals for comfort, but we recommend wearing closed-toe sturdy shoes (hiking shoes or solid sneakers).
- Protect Your Tech: Bring dry bags or heavy-duty plastic liners inside your backpack, even in the dry season.
- Safety Gear: We provide 3/4 helmets and protective body pads. No need to pack your own heavy armor.
1. Essential Documents & Cash
Before packing your bag, make sure you have these lock-tight essentials on your person:
- Passport & Visa: You don't need to bring your physical passport with you on the loop, but you do need to have a clear picture of it on your phone for homestay registration in both Ha Giang and Cao Bang. Also make sure you have your printed E-Visa if required.
- Driving Licenses (If Self-Driving): You MUST carry your home country motorcycle license AND an International Driving Permit (IDP 1968 model).
- Physical Cash: ATMs are extremely scarce on the loop (often out of service in Dong Van or Meo Vac). Cash is king in homestays for drinks, tips, and souvenirs. Bring around 1.5M - 2M VND per person in small denominations.
2. Packing By Season: Weather & Clothes
Northern Vietnam experience distinct seasons that completely alter the riding conditions. Find your travel window below to customize your clothing:
Spring
March – MayWeather: 15°C to 24°C. Spring has unpredictable weather—flowers are in bloom, but there can be surprise downpours and a mix of hot weather and rain.
Wear & Bring: Comfortable t-shirts, long pants, a fleece sweater, and a rain jacket or windproof jacket. Layers are key as the weather changes.
Summer / Monsoon
June – AugustWeather: 25°C to 34°C. Hot, humid, and heavy downpours. Lush, bright green rice fields.
Wear & Bring: Quick-dry activewear, shorts for homestays, swimwear (for waterfalls), sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and extra socks. Bring heavy-duty dry bags.
Autumn
September – NovemberWeather: 18°C to 26°C. Clear blue skies and golden rice terraces. Most of the time there is minimal rain, but autumn can be unpredictable—for instance, October 2025 saw severe flooding in Ha Giang.
Wear & Bring: T-shirts, regular jeans/pants, a light jacket for cold morning departures, and a warm hoodie for drop in evening temperatures.
Winter
December – FebruaryWeather: 5°C to 15°C. Cold, biting winds, and thick fog. Higher passes can drop close to freezing.
Wear & Bring: Thermal base layers (Uniqlo Heattech is excellent), thick winter coat/puffer, warm riding gloves, scarf, beanie, and closed hiking boots.
Do not underestimate the cold. Riding at 40km/h in 8°C weather creates a severe wind-chill effect. Windproof outer shells, beanies, and insulated gloves are absolute lifesavers during these months.
Standard weather apps are rarely accurate on the loop. Because you are traveling across varying altitudes, deep valleys, and high mountain passes, weather can change from clear sun to heavy rain or mist in a matter of minutes. Always pack for both rain and shine!
3. General Packing Checklist

Frequently Asked Packing Questions
Can I bring my large trolley suitcase on the motorbike?
No. Motorbikes can only securely carry a small backpack (tied down to the rear rack). You should leave your main large bags, suitcases, or trolley bags at our office or hostel in Ha Giang. We store them in a secure luggage room for free, and they will be waiting for you when you return from the loop.
What happens if my backpack gets wet during a downpour?
We tie down all bags to the back of the bike and cover them with heavy-duty rain covers. However, for maximum safety, we recommend lining the inside of your backpack with a plastic bag/trash bag to protect your electronics, passports, and dry clothing.
Should I bring my own helmet?
